Notice to Owners of Septic Tank Systems
or Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems
Kildare County Council advises owners of Septic Tank Systems or wastewater treatment systems that regular inspection and maintenance of your system is essential. This is to ensure that your system works effectively and to prevent your system from polluting groundwater, wells, watercourses and streams and to avoid public health issues from overground ponding of effluent where systems fail to operate satisfactorily.
The responsibility for the operation and maintenance of these systems lies with the owner of the premises connected to the treatment system. Systems should be de-sludged regularly and by a contractor holding a VALID Waste Collection Permit for this purpose.
Details can be checked at the National Waste Collection Permit Office - NWCOP
Telephone: 057 9357428 NWCO Website: https://www.nwcpo.ie/default.aspx .
NOTE: Farmers are only authorised to empty their own septic tanks, provided they follow the appropriate guidelines – Details can be obtained from Kildare County Council’s Environment Department:
Telephone: 045 980 588 or Email: environ@kildarecoco.ie
To keep your system working properly and the reduce the potential for operational issues, please do not permit grease, excessive bleach or chemicals, food, disposable items (such as nappies and wipes) and rainwater to enter your system. Keep a record of desludging and any servicing and maintenance works as this information may be requested if your treatment system is inspected by the local authority. The owner of the treatment system is required to ensure at all times that the treatment system does not present a risk to human health or the environment.
Please note that Kildare County Council will be carrying out inspections of Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems during 2026. The purpose of these inspections is to ensure that DWWTS’s are not causing negative impacts on human health or the environment. Kildare County Council will contact owners of DWWTS’s prior to an inspection to arrange a suitable date and time and your co-operation would be greatly appreciated.
