Kildare County Council Issues Reminder: Protect Our Watercourses During Closed Season
Kildare County Council would like to remind farmers and landowners of important regulations in place during the closed season and in preparation for the upcoming 2026 open season.
- The spreading and application of farmyard manure and organic fertiliser is prohibited in County Kildare until 13th January 2026. From this date, the application of farmyard manure and organic fertiliser may resume, provided weather and ground conditions are suitable, all buffer distances are observed, and the correct application methods are used
- Since 1st January 2025, the use of Low Emission Slurry Spreading (LESS) is compulsory on farms stocked at 100kg N/ha or above, and for all pig slurry applications.
- The spreading of soiled water on land is prohibited until after the 31st December 2025. From the 1st December 2025, this restriction applies to all milk producers, including those producing winter or liquid milk.
These measures are part of the EU (Good Agricultural Practices for Protection of Waters) GAP Regulations 2022, designed to protect water quality and prevent pollution.
