Kildare County Council Celebrates 100 Years of Library Service
1926 – 2026
Kildare County Council is proud to celebrate 100 years of Kildare Library Service, marking a century of learning, community and innovation across County Kildare.
The story began on 16 March 1926, when Kildare County Council formally adopted the Public Libraries (Ireland) Act, 1855. While Athy and Naas continued to operate independent services at the time, this decision laid the foundation for a unified, county-wide public library system.
Kildare County Council assumed responsibility for the county library service from the Carnegie Library Trust. A new Library Committee was established with oversight responsibilities, a librarian was appointed, and regular reporting and engagement with the Carnegie Trust were put in place.
A Century of Growth and Innovation
From these beginnings, Kildare Libraries has evolved into a modern, inclusive, safe and vibrant free public service, open to all. With 16 service locations, a busy Mobile Library, administrative services and an active Arts Service, the library network remains rooted in a tradition of personal service and community connection.
The service has also expanded far beyond its early remit. As digital technologies have transformed public expectations, Kildare Libraries has embraced change by offering:
- Extensive eServices, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, newspapers, digital learning tools and online resources
- Maker spaces with 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines and other creative technologies
- Expanded collections, from traditional books to computer games and DVDs
- A full programme of events including workshops, exhibitions, talks, classes and community activities
This ongoing evolution ensures that Kildare Library Service continues to meet the needs of residents of all ages and interests.
Building for the Future
The opening of the Naas Library and Cultural Centre has been an outstanding success, with strong patronage and community engagement. Opening hours have also been significantly extended in Clane and Kilcullen to better serve growing populations.
Further developments are planned :
- Construction will soon commence on a new library for Clane, designed to support the area’s rapidly expanding community.
- A state-of-the-art library, County Archives and Local History Centre is planned for Newbridge, creating a regional hub for learning, culture and heritage.
These developments reflect Kildare County Council’s ongoing commitment to investing in modern, welcoming, and forward-thinking library services.
Commenting on the centenary milestone, Gillian Allen, County Librarian, Kildare County Council said: “This centenary marks more than 100 years of history; it honours the communities, staff, and library patrons who have made Kildare Libraries what they are today. We are enormously proud of all that has been achieved and excited for what lies ahead.”
