Kildare County Council Welcomes Official Opening of New Maynooth Fire Station
Kildare County Council welcomes today’s official opening of the new Maynooth Fire Station by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD and Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD. The development, delivered at a cost of €4.4 million, represents a major Central Government investment in modern fire and emergency services for Maynooth and the surrounding area.
Kildare County Council acquired the site, which originally formed part of the wider Mullen Park housing development. The project was delivered in a 12-month build programme, was substantially completed in August 2025 and has been operational since October 2025.
The station has a staff of 12 and operates three main vehicles: a fire appliance, a water tanker and a hydraulic platform. A new fire appliance is currently being built and will be assigned to Maynooth when delivered. The purpose-built facility offers improved accommodation and a less congested location for crews to respond to and return from incidents.
On site, crews now have a dedicated training space and a training tower, enabling more training locally than was possible at the previous station, where Maynooth University was used for ladder training. Energy-saving features include an air-to-water heating system, solar panels and high levels of insulation, as well as an underground rainwater collection tank for pump operator training. Staff welfare facilities include individual personal changing spaces and single-occupancy shower areas.
The station was delivered by an architect-led design team appointed following tenders received in January 2022: Vincent Hannon and Associates (Architect); Tobin Consulting Engineers (Civil and Structural); Delap and Waller Consulting Engineers (Mechanical and Electrical); and Tom McNamara Quantity Surveyors. The main contractor was ML Quinn Construction.
The former Maynooth Fire Station site has been transferred to the Council’s Community Directorate.
Speaking at the official opening, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD said: "The new fire station here in Maynooth is a major investment in the safety and resilience of Kildare North. Our firefighters respond to a myriad of emergency incidents and by providing Maynooth fire brigade with this state-of-the-art, energy-efficient facility, we are ensuring they have a modern, sustainable base from which to perform their essential work. This is an exemplar project, showcasing inclusive design, featuring modern accessible and gender-neutral facilities that will help Maynooth fire brigade to reflect the community they serve now and into the future.”
Speaking at the official opening, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD said: “Today’s opening of the new Maynooth Fire Station is a significant investment of €4 million euro in both public safety and local infrastructure. This modern, purpose-built facility ensures our emergency services have the space, equipment, and training capacity they need to serve a growing community. It also reflects our commitment to supporting frontline responders with high-quality, sustainable workplaces that enable them to perform at their very best.”
The Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Cllr Carmel Kelly, added: “Today’s official opening of Maynooth Fire Station is a proud moment for Kildare County Council and for the wider Maynooth community. This €4 million investment strengthens local emergency response and provides our firefighters with a modern, purpose-built base that is fit for the needs of a growing area.”
Annette Aspell, Deputy Chief Executive, Kildare County Council said: “This project shows what can be achieved through strong partnership and careful planning. By securing this site and delivering the new station to modern standards, we have provided an important public facility that supports safer, more effective service delivery and long-term resilience for the area.”
Niall O’Riordan, A/Chief Fire Officer, Kildare County Council commented: “This new station is a major step forward for our crews. It provides better operational space, improved training facilities including a dedicated training tower, and modern welfare areas, all of which support readiness and safety. Since October 2025, crews have been responding from this station, and it will continue to enhance our capacity to protect the communities we serve.”
